(More customer reviews)I've been eating this soup for two decades now. I first read a rave about it in either a later version of The Whole Earth Catalog or in an issue of The Whole Earth Review. There was no internet then, so I had to order it by mail or by telephone.
The distributor no longer sells it direct to consumers, but you can find someone who does via a search engine. I bought a case from a small internet retailer in California in 2008. It has been intermittently available in upscale local grocery stores in my city, Memphis, at Schnuck's and at only one local Kroger store with tonier neighborhood demographics. No local stores carry it currently, but you might get lucky in the fancier stores in your city.
I don't have a can in front of me, so I may have the quantities wrong, but I believe the directions call for a tablespoon of butter and a whole soup can of whole milk. To make it much better, use half-again as much butter as called for on the can (no margarine!!) and substitute half a soup can of half-and-half for the can of whole milk. These changes alone make a great soup. BTW, don't use heavy cream; the soup becomes too thick and too rich (and hardly anything is too rich for me).
To add the crowning touch, though, add half a small can of clams; I've only found 2 brands suitable: Reese is one (available at many stores); the other is an Italian brand, Barzizza or something that sounds very similar, which I've bought at Kroger. If you substitute another brand, you've messed up a great bowl of soup.
A word of warning: once you try it this way, all other prepared clam chowders and many of those you buy in good restaurants will pale by comparison. The scales (shells?) will have fallen from your eyes.
